Summer Reading Part 1

I have never appreciated the concept of summer reading until I started to homeschool. I remember in school it was the most dreaded time and something that was always put off until the last possible second just to get the assignment done. Since we have started homeschooling and teaching our oldest how to read the value of reading has changed tremendously in my mind. How can I teach my child to love to read when I don't love to read? I desire so much for my children to love to read and find joy in books and absorbing the stories or information that they are getting from the books that they read.

This summer really marks the peak of our daughter learning how to read, she can sounds the words out and read a book on her own or with a little bit of help so our focus has shifted. I have made a reward system for the summer for her summer reading, 30 minutes of reading a day earns tokens to get a prize at the end of the summer. For the first time since learning to read she is finding some joy in reading and sharing stories with her brother....and as a mom who stressed out about teaching her child to read it really brings joy to my heart that in their own time they will find a love of reading.

So I am on the challenge with her this summer. I am challenging myself to find joy in reading and show my children that reading is fun and makes for great quiet time. I don't know that I will get a prize at the end of the summer but the greatest reward for me is knowing that I am living what I am teaching my children, that I am putting action to my words.

So here is my list...(Some are hard copy and some are on my kindle)
